Holiday break calls for a father-daughter morning pickup – rain or shine! Fifi was a great sport here; she loves the cold and any excuse to take a walk – especially to support our favorite park! We found a very long receipt, lots and lots of plastic wrappers (including one that had been there so long it started to disintegrate), a metal dip container, a styrofoam cup, and a few plastic bottles among the miscellaneous trash items. Anyway, our hands were numb, but the trash bag was full 😀
P.S. we started using new trash bags (Hefty ReNew) that follow an energy program focused on collecting hard-to-recycle plastics and other items. We found it to be a bit restrictive as it doesn’t allow colorful plastic wrappers or plastic water bottles (which we find a lot of at this park), so we reused a plastic grocery bag to collect any trash that wasn’t accepted by the Hefty ReNew bags.
Additionally, a comment on micro plastics: a very common thing I’ve encountered is forgotten plastic bags that sit so long they simply break into a bunch of tiny pieces when you try to pick it up. Something to be aware of is how these bags or other plastics will eventually break down and turn into micro plastics in the soil if we don’t make an active effort to pick them up before they sit too long!
